Safety
All of the Educational Consultants and Teachers associated with Geo-Ed are WACOT registered and understand the
importance of learning within a safe environment. Geo-Ed
incorporates student and teacher safety into all of its programs and
presentations in a number of ways.
Foremost, Geo-Ed has developed The Rock
Handlers Rules. These Rules are prominently displayed on all of our rock
sets and they are also displayed around the presentation venue. Prior to
handling the rocks the Geo-Ed presenter will
conduct a class brainstorm that focuses solely on rock handling rules. From
this brainstorm the presenter will ensure that all of the students and teachers
present in the venue are aware of the rules.
The majority of the rocks that Geo-Ed
presents to schools are natural rocks. They are generally washed when collected
and a few are polished to enhance their features, however most rocks bought
into schools are as found in nature. Hence students reminded about holding,
handling and placing rocks. Rocks may be heavy or have sharpish edges. It is
important when handling rocks to ensure that the rocks are not dropped onto the
feet or hands and that when placing rocks either on tables or into their boxes
that little fingers are not caught under the rocks.
Throughout the presentation students are reminded to be careful when handling
rocks.
Geo-Ed is aware that some rocks are
radioactive. No known radioactive rocks are bought into schools as part of the Geo-Ed Collection.
Geo-Ed is aware that some rocks are
naturally toxic or dangerous. Examples of this include lead ore and asbestos. Geo-Ed does not wish for students to come into
contact with these rocks; however we recognise the importance of students
seeing such rocks. To enable students to see these and other similar rocks Geo-Ed has especially designed transparent boxes
that securely display these rocks.
